Basically, there are two kinds of repetitions:
when you just look at information, e.g., in your notes, or a book
when you you recall an information using only your mind (this is "active recall"), e.g. I try to recall what is my phone number and I recall it without any external help - it's active recall.
Active recalls are MUCH, MUCH more effective, because while you are trying to recall any information at the same time you effectively reinforce your remembering of this information!
Sometimes it's called "power of question", because active recalls are also when somebody ask you something and you recall that information without any external help.
MemAid and SuperMemo use active recalls.
